The Rubbing Paradox

The “rubbing paradox” is crucial in understanding plantar foot blisters.

While friction (rubbing) is often seen as the cause of blisters, encouraging rubbing is often one of the best preventions. Remember, blisters form due to shear - the stretching and distortion of the soft tissue layers, initiated by the back-and-forth movement of foot bones, in the presence of high friction force.

This shear stress leads to microtears under the skin surface that fill with fluid, creating blisters. However, by reducing friction at the skin-sock, or sock-shoe interface, and encouraging even a small slip at that bony prominence, we can minimise shear stress within the skin. Read more here.

OFFICE HOURS

Plantar Forefoot Blisters

July's Office Hours was focused on the pathomechanics of foot blisters, with a special focus on those under the plantar forefoot. This session offered a visual and comprehensive exploration of the forces contributing to blister formation during walking and running. We also discussed the biomechanical factors and strategies to reduce plantar forefoot shear.

The replay is now available for your viewing. Don't miss the opportunity to catch up on the information shared during the session. Watch the session now!

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT

Hydrocolloid Blister Plasters

Equip your clinic with the latest blister products to ensure optimal self-care for your patients while they're out and about, enjoying an active lifestyle.

Hydrocolloids are a fantastic option for managing deroofed blisters due to their unique properties. These dressings create a moist environment that promotes faster healing and reduces pain by absorbing blister fluids and cushioning the blister area. They form a gel-like layer over the blister, providing a barrier against friction, pressure and external contaminants.

For your patients, this means quicker recovery times, less discomfort, and a reduced risk of further blister formation. By providing hydrocolloid dressings, you can offer your patients a reliable solution to manage and prevent plantar blisters effectively, ensuring they stay comfortable and active.
