Static versus Dynamic Friction. Basically, there are two parts to every "rub" episode. First there's the part where there is no relative motion between the skin surface and the overlying shoe/sock/orthosis (static friction). Then there's the part where there is relative motion (dynamic friction). Peak shear is determined by the former, not the latter!
