MYTHS

Debunking 7 Blister Myths

Persistent myths about blister prevention continue to mislead many, potentially causing more harm than benefit. Contrary to popular belief, friction blisters aren't caused by rubbing, and traditional recommendations like taping and moleskin may not offer the level of protection you think.

The science shows that blisters actually result from shear forces rather than simple rubbing, with moisture and friction serving as just part of the equation. Read more about the 7 myths here > The 7 Blister Prevention Myths.

POPULAR BELIEF

Burn Blister vs Friction Blister

It's a popular belief that foot friction blisters are a type of burn blister. This belief is completely incorrect. It sounds reasonable—after all, rubbing two sticks together creates heat, and skin gets warmer with locomotion. But while skin temperature does increase slightly, research has shown it’s not enough to cause a burn.

Burn blisters result from second-degree burns, where heat damages deeper layers of skin. Friction blisters, on the other hand, form due to shear forces—when bones under load move relative to the skin surface, causing a tear under the skin surface.

This myth has persisted for decades, despite research proving otherwise. Read more about this topic here > Burn Blister versus Friction Blister.
