EVENT

Australian 6-Day Ultramarathon 2024

I hit the ground running (pun intended!) at the Australian 6-Day Ultramarathon Festival 2024, where I managed 113 foot care episodes over seven action-packed days. While competitors pushed their limits - with standouts Blaine Bourke smashing out 855.615km and Nikki Wynd crushing 646.185km in the 6-day event - I kept busy treating everything from blisters to tendon issues. The event had its share of drama too, with two ambulance calls, some gastro troubles, and even some wild weather throwing a curveball in the final hour!

Working with runners across all event categories (from 24-hour to the full 6-day ultramarathon), I treated nearly two-thirds of the 57 participants. My podiatry tent became quite the hotspot, with heel edge and fifth-toe blisters being the usual suspects. But here's the kicker - while some runners came super-prepared with their blister prevention gear, others had all the right equipment but hadn't quite gotten around to using it before the starting gun. Talk about a valuable lesson learned the hard way!

See the gnarly blisters I've treated here.

EVENT

SMA & ACSEP Conference 2024

Fresh off the ultramarathon circuit, I traded my treatment tent for a trade booth at the SMA & ACSEP Conference 2024, making quite the splash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. As a cricket enthusiast, the venue choice was particularly special, and my debut as a trade exhibitor proved that blisters are a hot topic across all sports medicine disciplines.

My poster presentation, co-authored with Doug Richie, received fantastic feedback, and as a rural practitioner, connecting with fellow podiatrists and sports medicine professionals was invaluable.

If anyone wants to know how to get more involved in blister screening, prevention or treatment, or you just want to get a deeper understanding of the blister injury mechanism, please get in touch.
